Cavs Win Draft Lottery (Again)
- The Cleveland Cavaliers won the NBA’s
Draft Lottery for the second time in three years, giving them the top
pick in this summer’s draft. The NBA determines its top 3 picks by a
lottery weighted inversely by overall record (the worst record gets
the best odds, the second worst record gets the second best odds etc).
- The Cavs entered with third worst record, and a 15.6% chance of winning
the lottery.
The Orlando Magic, who had the worst record (and the best odds), ended up with
the second pick and the Washington Wizards (who had the 8th best
chance) moved up to the third pick. Spots 4-14 are then determined by
record (with 15-30 determined by playoff finish). The Charlotte Bobcats
(who may change their name to the Hornets soon) were supposed to pick second but will now pick 4th.
- This
marks the 9th straight year the team with the worst record didn’t get
the top pick. The last team to do so was the Orlando Magic in 2004. The
top pick is likely to come down to Kentucky’s shotblocking phenom, Nerlens Noel, or the athletic Kansas guard, Ben McLemore.
Trout hits for cycle
- L.A. Angels phenom Mike Trout became the youngest player in American League history to hit for the cycle in a game, connecting with a single, double, triple, and home run in the Angels' 12-0 win against the Seattle Mariners on Tuesday night. Trout additionally had a stolen base and 5 RBI's.
- While five players have hit for the cycle at a younger age, they all played in the National League and the next closest was Alex Rodriguez who did so at 21 years and 313 days, when he was 25 days older than Trout is now. Most impressively perhaps is that Trout accomplished the feat on low pitches, something he has struggled with this season. In fact, the home run that he hit was barely knee-high and was well outside of the range of most hitters. But Trout is not most hitters and the phenom who went from the minor leagues to nearly winning the A.L. MVP last season showed yet again why he could become one of the greatest players ever before all is said and done.
